The physician members of Reliant Medical Group today took a key step in ensuring Reliant stays at the forefront of providing high-quality health care to the people of Massachusetts by voting to align with Optum, a health services company that focuses on modernizing health-system infrastructure and advancing the provision of value-based care.
By partnering with Optum, Reliant expects to bolster its ability to grow and expand, modernize many of its clinical facilities, have access to advanced data analytics capabilities, and attract top medical talent to its practices.
“Reliant Medical Group is committed to providing the people we serve the highest level of care, and partnering with Optum will help us give patients innovative, high-quality, local care in ways that maximize efficiency and patient satisfaction,” said Tarek Elsawy, M.D., president & CEO of Reliant.

Reliant and Optum will now move toward a definitive agreement, which will be subject to Massachusetts regulatory review and approval. The transaction completion date is unknown at this time. The Reliant Board of Trustees had previously unanimously approved pursuing the transaction.
Should the agreement move forward, Reliant would continue to be locally operated and serve patients under the Reliant Medical Group brand in the Central and MetroWest regions (to include Southboro Medical Group, a division of Reliant Medical Group). Reliant’s workforce, including physicians, staff and management, would not change as a result of the transaction. The medical group would continue to serve patients through multiple insurance plans.

Will Reliant still be a non-profit organization after the transaction?? Will Reliant be owned by Optum after the transaction ??? The need for access to capital in order to remain at the most modern and efficient in medical care delivery is understandable. I am concerned how the transaction will affect the organization as a whole.
Hi Robert. As has been reported, Optum and Reliant are in the process of pursuing a partnership. Should this happen, Optum would acquire Reliant. The state will be determining Reliant’s tax status as part of its regulatory review.
