“I want to arm my patients with information so they can take care of themselves.”

Growing up in a small town in Jamaica, Dr. Allian Iffih’s family had an old-fashioned family doctor who helped bring out her interest in medicine. “My doctor kind of took care of our whole community, and everyone knew and respected him,” she explains. “He was definitely an inspiration to me when it came time to choose a career. And once I settled on medicine, it just felt right to me.”

As a family practitioner Dr. Iffih treats a range of issues including high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, endocrine problems, thyroid disease, headaches, muscular skeletal issues and also has a big interest in women’s health. She believes in practicing preventative medicine, to help her patients avoid chronic diseases that have become so common. “I feel it’s important to emphasize preventative medicine as much as possible. I would rather prevent health problems now than worry about treating them later. It’s better for patients that way.”

Dr. Iffih likes to educate her patients as much as she can about their health. “I feel like my job is to get patients better educated and more comfortable taking care of themselves. So when I have a patient that comes in with a problem, I don’t want to just treat it, I want to talk about what could have caused it – and what the patient can do so it doesn’t happen again. I want to arm my patients with information so they can take care of themselves.”

Dr. Iffih always remembers the special patients that make big progress and turn their health around. “Sometimes doctors can feel stuck in a cycle trying to fix things over and over, but when you have a patient that suddenly gets it and makes key changes in their life, it’s very rewarding. Patients like that you never forget.”

In her spare time Dr. Iffih enjoys reading fiction, especially author James Patterson. She also likes to make earrings and other jewelry at home. Dr. Iffih also loves music, including reggae, jazz and blues and listening to pop music with her kids. The mother of four girls, she also spends a lot of time on soccer fields and basketball courts watching her children play.
