“As a doctor you get the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives and that’s really important for me.”
For Dr. Amanjot Sidhu, being a doctor comes naturally. “My motivation for working in the field of medicine is due to the sole reason of being able to make a positive impact on people’s lives,” she explains. “I don’t remember, ever, not wanting to be a doctor, as it just seemed a natural choice for me.”
In her practice Dr. Sidhu enjoys utilizing the latest advances that medicine has to offer. “I firmly believe our understanding of human diseases and ailments has never been better before. This is shifting the balance of patient care, from a reactive approach to a more proactive approach based on prevention and wellness. As an internist, I get an opportunity to work with my patients to help them make decisions for their long-term well being.”
When meeting with her patients, Dr. Sidhu makes a point to connect with them as much as possible. “I realize that patients need emotional support along with medical healing. So I talk to them, listen to them, and spend time to get to know them, so that I can provide better care. I think building a relationship based on trust is very important.”
Dr. Sidhu is experienced in treating different types of illnesses that affect adults, like diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, COPD, etc. Her primary area of interest is working with diabetic patients. “Diabetes has many complications, but if treated at the right time they can be avoided,” she explains.
One of the biggest problems that many of Dr. Sidhu’s patients face is obesity. “Life is so busy, everyone is so stressed and they frequently don’t make the right choices, be it in their food or their lifestyle. As a result of that, you end up being overweight and unhealthy. Obesity is a major problem in the U.S., and it’s spreading like an epidemic. It’s a real challenge to educate patients about correct lifestyle choices and how to improve their overall health.”
When she is not busy with her patients, Dr. Sidhu enjoys reading and spending time with her husband and family. She also enjoys traveling, Napa Valley being one of her favorite places.
