“The more patients know about their health the more they can help themselves.”
Originally from Nepal, Dr. Bibek Koirala always had a passion for science, which eventually led him to the study of medicine. He enjoys being a hospitalist, since it allows him to treat all the different systems of the body. “I think being a hospitalist offers a true picture of what it’s like to practice medicine since you aren’t just dealing with one aspect of the body,” he explains. “You are really treating everything.”
In his work as a hospitalist, Dr. Koirala treats a wide range of patient problems including heart issues, kidney disease, strokes, pulmonary disease, pneumonia, and many other issues. “Every day we deal with patients that have new symptoms and things we haven’t seen before – that’s what makes being a hospitalist so challenging and interesting.”
Working in the hospital Dr. Koirala has seen how electronic medical records have helped improve patient care. “Now it’s very easy to access information from a patient’s primary care doctor. You can learn a patient’s history, medications they might be allergic to, as well as so many other key things. Electronic medical records are a great tool for a hospitalist to have.”
Dr. Koirala believes strongly in educating his patients about their health problems. “There’s no doubt that education is a very important part of medicine now. The more patients know about their health the more they can help themselves and enjoy a healthier life.”
When he is not busy treating patients, Dr. Koiral loves to be outdoors and especially enjoys hiking. He also likes watching movies and documentaries on PBS, as well as reading, especially books on history.
Please Note: Dr. Koirala provides acute medical care for patients who are admitted to Saint Vincent Hospital.
