“It’s a great feeling when you know that someone’s life has been positively changed through your work...”
Growing up in Guatemala, Dr. Hugo Castellanos Méndez saw how his father made a big difference in the lives of others as an OB-Gyn physician. “Of course, at first I didn’t want to be an OB-Gyn physician like my father was, but eventually my love of surgery and my desire to help others made it the best choice for me,” he explains. “I think women’s health is an area that’s very exciting and allows you to make a big impact with patients.”
Dr. Castellanos provides a full spectrum of gynecological services, including deliveries. He has a big interest in laparoscopic surgery as well as robotic surgery for treating conditions such as pelvic pain, cervical dysplasia, fibroids, and endometriosis. “Laparoscopic surgery is something I have a real passion for. I enjoy learning new techniques from other surgeons when I have the chance. There’s so many benefits for patients with laparoscopic procedures.”
In working with his patients Dr. Castellanos believes that it’s very important for them to understand what their problem is and how he can best help them. “I think as doctors we have to be careful about speaking in just medical terms. I make a big effort to help patients understand what their condition is and the different ways I can help. I always want to make sure each patient gets the care they need.”
Dr. Castellanos has always received a great deal of satisfaction from his work as an OB-Gyn physician. “It’s a great feeling when you know that someone’s life has been positively changed through your work whether helping to save someone’s life in an emergency or using surgery to alleviate a long-time problem – it’s very humbling in a lot of ways. One of the things I want my patients to know is that I will care for them as if they were a family member. I think if you take that perspective you will always have your patient’s best interest at heart.”
When he is not busy treating patients, Dr. Castellanos enjoys cooking at home, especially Mexican food. He is also a big soccer fan and enjoys playing as much as he can.
