“I’ve always taken great satisfaction in delivering babies and the joy that brings to families.”
It was volunteering at a hospital when was he was young that first got Dr. James Roan interested in medicine. “When I was in college I volunteered at a local hospital and met staff and physicians who made me feel that medicine would make a really good career choice for me,” he explains. “Later, when I was in medical school, I found out I really enjoyed doing rotations in OB-Gyn, and that led me to where I am now.” Dr. Roan is now proud to be the Director of Quality Safety at Reliant.
Of all the things that Dr. Roan likes about his job, helping couples have healthy babies is clearly what he enjoys the most. “I’ve always taken great satisfaction in delivering babies and seeing the joy that brings to families. In fact, there are a lot of patients in my practice that I’ve known for 15 years. Some of my patients have had three or four children and I’ve delivered them all. It’s very rewarding to be involved with families like that.”
As well as delivering babies, Dr. Roan also provides gynecological care for women. “I see women for everything from wellness visits to problems such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, urinary infections and other issues. I can also perform Pap smears, colposcopy exams and help with family planning and any other gynecological needs they might have.”
Being able to use the latest technologies to help his patients is something that Dr. Roan truly enjoys. “There have been some really great advances in laparoscopic surgical equipment over the years. In fact, now you can do a whole hysterectomy though an instrument that is the diameter of a pen, so it’s really amazing how our technology has evolved.”
Dr. Roan, who grew up on Long Island, was a Yankees fan as a child but now roots for the Red Sox and Patriots. He and his wife have four children and they are very involved in youth sports, especially hockey. In his free time Dr. Roan also enjoys running to stay in shape and fly-fishing for trout.
