“I was really drawn to the caring, compassionate side of medicine.”

When she was young, Dr. Jana Balas says she never thought about any other career path other than becoming a doctor. “Growing up, I guess you could say that it was my passion to become a physician,” she explains. “When I was in high school, I volunteered at a hospital and had a chance to shadow doctors. As a medical student I found I really liked the patient interaction…talking to people, building that relationship. I was really drawn to the caring, compassionate side of medicine.”

Now as a podiatrist at Reliant Medical Group, Dr. Balas has the opportunity to help patients who have problems with their feet. “Like most people, I had never really thought about feet. But when I was younger I had an accident and I needed a sports medicine doctor and a physical therapist to help me walk again properly. So that really gave me an appreciation of podiatry and learning more about it. Now I enjoy providing routine diabetic foot care and treatment for trauma and pediatric sports injuries, ulcers, ingrown toenails, plantar fasciitis and other foot problems.”

In her practice Dr. Balas uses the latest tools to help patients. “For podiatry, technology has really evolved in terms of what we can do and allowed us to help patients in new ways,” Dr. Balas explains. “We now use ultrasound for treatments and different modalities for physical therapy as well as new drugs and surgical procedures. We have a lot of options with the new treatments that are coming out all the time, but podiatry is still a very hands-on profession.”

For Dr. Balas, patient care is the center of everything she does each day. “I think it’s important to get to know my patients and understand what they want out of their care,” she explains. “I really enjoy helping patients and seeing them smile when they leave the office…doing the little things that make their day better. That’s what makes being a podiatrist so satisfying.”

When she is not busy with her patients, Dr. Balas likes to cook and play tennis. She also enjoys drawing as well as reading favorite authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald.
