“It’s great to be a part of a patient’s journey and see them get better.”

As a psychiatrist at Reliant Medical Group, Dr. Jennifer Villa treats patients for a variety of problems including anxiety and depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder.

In her practice Dr. Villa enjoys working with patients as part of a team. “I enjoy when the person I am working with wants to get involved in their care,” she explains. “I always want to make a decision with them on what is best. Having someone invested in the treatment they receive is much more likely to lead to a positive outcome, which is why people need to be empowered in their care.”

Dr. Villa has noticed that people have more awareness of mental health problems these days. “For a variety of reasons, more people are willing to accept treatment for issues like depression and anxiety now. It’s important for people to understand, however, that effective treatment is not just about taking a pill. I tell people that treatment is really like a pie and you have to fill in the different slices. Finding the right therapies and combinations of therapies takes time. It’s great to be a part of a patient’s journey and see them get better.”

If Dr. Villa encounters someone who is hesitant to get treatment, she will often tell them that dealing with a mental illness isn’t that different than dealing with diabetes or hypertension. “Just as you shouldn’t be ashamed for getting treatment for something like high blood pressure, you shouldn’t be ashamed for getting treatment for a mental health concern,” she explains. “It should be viewed like any other medical problem that needs to be treated.”

In her spare time Dr. Villa enjoys going hiking and biking and finding new places to explore. She also loves spending as much time as possible with her husband and her son and their two dogs.
