A graduate of the New England College of Optometry, Dr. John Whiting has been a practicing optometrist for 25 years. He was originally inspired to become an optometrist because of the eye problems he had as a youngster. “It wasn’t until I had my eyes tested in 5th grade that my vision problems really became known. Once I started wearing glasses my grades really improved. I think that really taught me the importance of a good eye doctor.”
During an exam, Dr. Whiting will sometimes discover an unrelated health problem a patient is experiencing. “I had one long term patient who mentioned that she had a blind spot in her vision. I recommended that she see a neurologist to have it checked and it turned out she had a brain aneurysm. Fortunately, they were able to help her and she is fine now. That’s one reason why I always listen carefully to my patients, you never know what could turn up.”
Dr. Whiting enjoys working with and interacting with his colleagues at Reliant Medical Group. “I really enjoy the interaction and being part of a group practice. It’s great to be able to talk things over with your colleagues. I was practicing alone for a number of years and that really makes you appreciate working in a group practice.”
Like other Reliant Medical Group optometrists, Dr. Whiting often refers patients to the Division of Ophthalmology if they have a serious eye problem that may require surgery. “We can deal with many eye problems here in Optometry, but if someone requires surgery for cataracts or glaucoma or other diseases of the eye, they are referred to Ophthalmology for treatment. One of the benefits of working at Reliant Medical Group is that we can easily refer patients to the right physician for their needs. That way, we know they will receive the best possible care no matter what their problem.”
When Dr. Whiting is not busy with his patients in Fitchburg he enjoys being outdoors and playing softball and golf with friends. He also enjoys spending time at Old Orchard Beach in Maine. “It’s one of my favorite places to go in all of New England. I really enjoy it there.”
