“I make patients aware that a condition like high blood pressure can lead to a greater chance of a stroke, heart attack, kidney disease and other problems that they can work to prevent.”
Dr. Lisetta Shah worked as a middle school science teacher before becoming a physician. “I taught in a rural area of Mississippi and noticed a lot of children suffering from health issues and health inequities,” she explains. “That’s what really made me want to study and practice medicine.”
In her practice at Reliant, Dr. Shah treats a lot of people who have multiple, chronic health conditions. “Usually if someone has one condition such as high blood pressure it will also lead to other problems,” she explains. “Sometimes, patients wonder why they should care about their blood pressure being high. I make patients aware that a condition like high blood pressure can lead to a greater chance of a stroke, heart attack, kidney disease and other problems that they can work to prevent. Often making simple dietary and lifestyle changes can improve high blood pressure and prevent these issues.”
In addition to treating chronic disease, Dr. Shah also has a lot of experience in women’s health, prenatal and newborn care, as well as addiction treatment. She enjoys being a “hands-on” physician and often performs procedures in the office including skin biopsies, Nexplanon implants, joint injections, and cyst removals.
Dr. Shah has been treating substance use disorders (SUDs) for years, prescribing medications such as suboxone and collaborating with behavioral health clinicians. She feels passionate about SUD treatment because of how many lives it saves. She regards SUD as a chronic disease that can be effectively managed through treatment. Dr. Shah finds it especially rewarding to provide long-term care for patients with SUDs, following them as they achieve and maintain sobriety, and witnessing the wonderful, positive changes they are able to make in their lives.
When she is not busy seeing patients Dr. Shah enjoys being with her husband and two sons. She stays active through endurance sports including running, rock climbing, and hiking. Dr. Shah also enjoys her fruit and vegetable garden and doing home canning. She also enjoys the arts including drawing and print-making as well as knitting.
