“People’s mental outlook really does seem to play a role in their health.”

A practicing psychiatrist for well over four decades, Dr. Mark Cutler enjoys making a difference in the lives of the patients he treats.

Dr. Cutler believes in an individualized, humanistic approach to care. “Much of what I do with patients is really education. For instance, I try to teach people that stress is a normal human response, but it can have a big effect upon their health and well-being. We teach people different methods of dealing with stress, so they can better cope with it in their lives.”

Although he deals with many different issues and problems, Dr. Cutler has a special interest in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as childhood sexual abuse. “I have helped a lot of people who have suffered with PTSD and childhood abuse. We can target some of the symptoms such as depression, nightmares, sleeplessness, and obsessive thoughts. We also use therapy to try to empower patients and help them confront what happened and prove to themselves that now they can take care of themselves and live a better life.”

In his work Dr. Cutler has learned that having a good mental outlook and support from loved ones can really make a difference in how people fight off a disease. “People’s mental outlook really does seem to play a role in their health,” he explains. “I think it can really make a difference, even in diseases like cancer.”

Dr. Cutler says that the best part of coming to work for him is making a difference in people’s lives. “People come to me and they can’t sleep, they can’t eat, they’re feeling depressed – they really need help. By providing proper treatment we can help them concentrate and accomplish things in their life such as taking advantage of an employment opportunity and enjoying family life again. That’s what makes this job so rewarding.”

When he is not busy seeing patients Dr. Cutler enjoys his family time. He currently has three children and five grandchildren. He also loves to travel and explore other cultures around the world. Ever since he was in the Army Dr. Cutler has been an active runner and so far he has completed 43 marathons. He still loves to go running every chance he gets.
