"I really love the hands-on aspect of medicine.”

Back when she was in college, Dr. Nicole Winters first thought of becoming a chemical engineer. Although she really enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of her studies, she ultimately wanted to spend more time interacting with people and helping others. “I decided medicine would be an ideal career because it would allow me to solve problems and also devote my life to helping other people.”

Asked why she decided to pursue a career in Family Practice medicine, Dr. Winters explains, “I like working with kids, I like working with people…I really enjoy the variety and the fact that every day is different. A Family Practice physician has the chance to do pediatrics, OB-Gyn and geriatrics…it’s really a little bit of everything which makes it very interesting.”

In her practice at Reliant Medical Group in Leominster, Dr. Winters especially enjoys working with adolescents and young women. “A lot of adolescent care is preventative medicine, ideally you try to catch people before their bad habits are formed or before they have developed life-long problems. I tell young people that I’m not here to criticize them, I’m here to help them be as healthy as they can be. That way they will be as open and honest with you as possible.”

When she was younger, Dr. Winters’ grandmother taught her how to sew, which gave her a great head-start when she was learning surgical procedures in medical school. “I’ve always enjoyed doing procedures in the office, whether it’s sewing up a wound, doing a drainage, or removing a mole…I really love the hands-on aspect of medicine.”

An avid distance runner, in her free time Dr. Winters enjoys being outdoors exercising with her husband and their golden retriever. She also enjoys traveling to favorite places such as Ecuador and doing different activities with their children.
