As a hematologist/oncologist at Reliant Medical Group, Dr. Nisha Ajit knows that when people come to see her, it’s usually a difficult time in their life. “When patients come to see you they are usually scared and anxious. When you have a diagnosis of cancer, it can really affect you emotionally,” she explains. “However, as a physician, I know I have the knowledge and the tools to really help them through the process of being diagnosed, developing a treatment plan, and making sure they get the best in care.”

Dr. Ajit has a special interest in treating breast cancer and lung cancer. She also has a lot of expertise in benign hematology that deals with problems such as abnormal platelet and white blood cell counts. “It’s an interesting field because you play the detective, looking at all the clues that could cause that problem,” she explains.

According to Dr. Ajit, immunotherapy and targeted therapy have really changed the landscape of cancer treatment. “There is a tremendous amount of research going on. We are moving forward toward a cure in many types of cancers. For instance, targeted therapy is more precise at targeting cancer cells causing minimal damage to healthy cells. The new drugs have really made a difference in treating many types of cancers.”

In her practice at Reliant, Dr. Ajit always strives to be there for her patients when they need her. “It’s a very difficult time for them and they often want a hand to hold, someone to listen to them,” she explains. “I’m there, providing hope, and helping them along with their journey. I find that very satisfying as a doctor. Every day counts when I can help change someone’s life for the better.”

When she is not busy with patients, Dr. Ajit likes to spend quality time with her family; especially traveling and cooking together. “I love exploring new places, cultures and cuisines. I often come off these excursions appreciating how amazingly different and, yet, deeply connected we humans are.”
