“Performing surgery can be really gratifying...people come back a week later and they are already happier.”
Originally from Montreal, Dr. Pascale Perusse first came to America after finishing her medical education. Before joining Reliant, she spent many years running her own ophthalmology practice here in Worcester. “Ophthalmology for me is a great specialty because it’s narrow enough that you can stay on top of the changes, plus it has a nice cross-section of medical and surgical care,” she explains. “I also like the fact that you can treat all age groups, from babies to senior citizens.”
In her practice at Reliant, Dr. Perusse specializes in Oculoplastics (Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery). “I help patients with eyelid surgery, tear duct surgery, and cancer surgery…anything in or around the eyelid. The reasons I enjoy surgery so much are the delicate workmanship of eyelid surgery and the efficient solving of medical issues. I also always make a point to take my time and explain options to the patient. I think that it is crucial to let them know what’s going on, why it’s going on, and what the options are. I truly believe that it is important to involve the patients themselves in their care.”
For Dr. Perusse, working closely with patients and using her surgical skills to help them is really the heart of what she does. “I get a lot of satisfaction from just being handed a problem and fixing it. It’s great to see the immediate result of improving a health situation for someone. Performing surgery can be really gratifying…people come back a week later and they are already happier and feeling better,” she explains. “I’m also really proud to work with the ophthalmology team here. Everyone is very skilled and dedicated to providing the best care possible.”
When she is not busy seeing patients, Dr. Perusse enjoys competitive ballroom dancing. She also likes to cook with her fiancé, especially international cuisine. Dr. Perusse also enjoys reading when she has the time. Her favorite author is Margaret Atwood, the Canadian author of The Handmaid’s Tale.
