“I always liked the idea of being a physician, even as a child.”

Born and raised in Buenos Aries, Argentina, Dr. Raul Davaro always knew that he wanted to become a doctor. “I always liked the idea of being a physician, even as a child,” he explains. “Around age twelve or thirteen and in high school, I knew I wanted to practice medicine.” After becoming interested in the care of patients with HIV, Dr. Davaro decided to dedicate himself to the field of infectious diseases. In coming to the United States, he knew this would become the specialty he would pursue.

Early in his career, Dr. Davaro was strongly impacted by those who lost their lives to the HIV epidemic. “That really affected me a lot,” he explains. “It’s still a big problem. We have about 3,000 new cases of HIV infection each year in this country.” In his practice at Reliant Dr. Davaro treats patients with HIV, hepatitis C, and other infectious diseases. He is a big believer in helping patients get the drug therapies and social support they need. “There is a lot of support out there that many patients may not realize,” he explains. In addition to treating patients, Dr. Davaro also teaches residents and medical students at Worcester Medical Center.

Dr. Davaro finds that technology plays a huge role in the way he practices medicine. “There has been a revolution of technology in the past 25 years in the management of HIV and hepatitis C,” he explains. “Biotechnology has really changed the way we practice, allowing us to treat these patients so much better now. They are able to live longer with fewer complications from their illness.”

In coming to work each day, Dr. Davaro finds he most enjoys being able to make a difference for his patients. He also truly enjoys teaching as well. “It’s great to be able to help patients and work with medical students and residents each day,” he explains. “The teaching and service make every day interesting for me.”

In his spare time, Dr. Davaro enjoys running and reading history books. He particularly enjoys learning about American history.
