“The more you can partner with a patient and collaborate with them, the better.”

Dr. Robert Clyman originally thought he was going to be a pediatrician when he entered medical school but his strong interest in mental and behavioral health soon led him to the field of psychiatry. “As I went through the different rotations in medical school I realized that psychiatry was what interested me the most,” he explains. “Behavioral health for me is really the cornerstone of healthcare because it has such a huge impact on people’s physical health and well-being.”

Dr. Clyman has spent much of his career working in a community mental health environment. “I like working with families and family systems. There’s no doubt treatment is more effective that way rather than just working with someone as an individual…because the individual is not an island but is part of the family system and their struggles affect the entire family.”

Dr. Clyman treats all sorts of problems including depression and anxiety, bipolar illnesses, borderline personality disorder, and trauma. He also has a lot of experience working with LBGT patients on mental health issues. Dr. Clyman likes the fact that Reliant has integrated Behavioral Health clinicians into the primary care environment at Reliant. “I think it’s the wave of the future, the integration of behavioral with physical health. So I am very excited to be in an integrated practice.”

When working with his patients, Dr. Clyman believes that collaboration and respect is vital. “People come to me for advice. It’s not my role to dictate, or tell them what to do, but really to help them understand the causes that brought them here, review the different options for reducing their symptoms, and help improve their quality of life. I think the more you can partner with a patient and collaborate with them, the better.”

In his off hours, Dr. Clyman spends time with his family (including husband, three children and miniature poodle Milo). He enjoys being out in nature, gardening or hiking in the woods with Milo. He also is a fan of old movies, reads lots of young adult historical fiction and is an amateur DJ with a huge vinyl record collection.
