“Basically, we’re treating a region of the body.”
When he was in college, Dr. Robert Grondin knew he ultimately wanted to become a specialist but wasn’t sure which specialty it would be. After shadowing his brother-in-law who is a podiatrist in New Hampshire, he knew what his decision would be. “I chose podiatry because it was very hands-on with a lot of people interaction,” he explains. “Plus it gives you the opportunity to have a really big impact on your patients in just one visit.”
As a podiatrist, Dr. Grondin treats virtually any type of problem with the foot or ankle. “Basically, we’re treating a region of the body, whether it’s dermatological, neurological, vascular, muscular, or skeletal, it’s still the same region. So whether its nail problems or ankle pain or bunions with hammer toes, there really isn’t much that we can’t handle in terms of the foot and ankle.”
In his practice, Dr. Grondin often performs surgical procedures such as forefoot reconstruction and tendon transfers. “I really enjoy the surgical aspect of podiatry. There’s a lot of ways we can help patients with surgery such as using tendon transfers to correct hammer-toe deformities and fusing joints for arthritic patients, as well as many other procedures.”
No matter what procedure he is performing, Dr. Grondin truly enjoys working with his patients and making a difference for them. “It’s very gratifying for me when someone walks in the office with pain and I can do something to help them walk away without it. That’s what makes being a podiatrist special.”
When he isn’t busy helping patients Dr. Grondin enjoys spending time with his wife (who is also a podiatrist), visiting Maine, and enjoying outdoor activities such as the beach and hiking. He also likes running, playing golf and skiing when time allows.
