“You have to take the time to let the patient say what is on their mind.”

“Going to college in Michigan in the late 1960’s, Dr. Robert Honig learned that collaboration with others was very important. “With a collaborative philosophy, everyone is part of a team working together. Not just the doctors, but the radiologists, technicians, and nurses. I think that when everyone has input on the process things tend to work better all around.”

Dr. Honig has been an internist with Reliant Medical Group for over 30 years. During this time he has learned the importance of communication. “You have to take the time to let the patient say what is on their mind. Sometimes it can take a while and sometimes it can just take a moment. But this communication is very important when it comes to addressing patient needs,” he explains. “Dr. John Meyers, one of the physicians who started Reliant Medical Group, was a master at this and I learned a lot from him. He realized that most of the doctor-patient visit was really listening.”

With the popularity of the Internet, Dr. Honig has seen how many patients are now educating themselves about their medical problems online. “It can be very helpful to do this but patients have to be careful about the information sources they use. Just because something is in on the Internet doesn’t mean that it’s always the most accurate information available. However, I do think it’s important for patients to be informed so they can discuss important issues with their doctor. I’m glad Reliant Medical Group offers its patients a really helpful online health encyclopedia.”

Over the years, Dr. Honig has seen how technology has led to greatly improved care for his internal medicine patients. “Diagnostic radiology has made great strides in the last few years. The images from CT scans, ultrasounds and other methods are simply outstanding and have really benefited patients. Surgery has also improved and the new laparoscopic procedures have made recovery times much shorter for the patient. Cardiology has also grown much more sophisticated with advancements like stents and ICDs that have allowed people to avoid major surgery and enjoy a better quality of life.”

During his free time Dr. Honig enjoys exercising and spending time with his family. He has run in two Boston marathons and also enjoys skiing to stay in shape. Dr. Honig has also ridden in the Pan-Mass Challenge for many years, a 192-mile charity bike ride that benefits the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Honig has also been back and forth to Israel several times and has even met world leaders like Shimon Peres. A frequent visitor to Central and South America, he is a big believer in helping those who are less fortunate. Dr. Honig has even learned Spanish to help with his volunteer activities. “I have been going on medical missions to Honduras and most recently, a Haitian refugee camp in the Dominican Republic. It’s been a wonderful experience to help others in this part of the world.”
