For Dr. Seth Curtis, becoming a physician all started with a trip to UMass Medical School when he was in high school. “That’s where I fell in love with medicine and science,” he explains. Before going to medical school, Dr. Curtis first earned a Master’s degree in Public Health at Boston University, where he focused on international health and access to healthcare for people with disabilities. “My education in public health helped solidify my belief that specializing in Family Medicine was the best way for me to care for patients, their families, and their communities.”

Dr. Curtis has long been familiar with our organization as he was a patient of Fallon Clinic when he was growing up in Leominster. “It is a tight community here in Leominster, and it’s great to come back to practice medicine in a place that I know and understand. I think it is a huge advantage to be able to understand your patients and where they are coming from.”

When he first meets a new patient Dr. Curtis often asks what his or her goals are. “People have different health goals and these often change throughout a person’s life. For instance, for the children I see, their parents want to keep them as safe and happy as possible. Whereas these parents may have a more complicated goal for themselves, balancing all of life’s responsibilities while staying healthy enough to be active with their loved ones into and beyond retirement. One reason why I talk about long term goals is because it helps me introduce the idea of preventative care, which is often more effective than trying to fix problems after they develop.”

To make access to care easier for patients, Dr. Curtis enjoys doing procedures right in the office including joint injections and aspirations, Pap smears, IUD placements, biopsies, and minor cosmetic procedures such as removing moles and treating other skin issues. As well as doing hands-on procedures, Dr. Curtis also enjoys the scientific introspection of being a physician. “It’s always interesting to dive-in and take the time to truly think about a person’s complaint in order to help them as much as you can. The attention to the science and evidence is one of the things that make being a doctor unique from other professions that serve others.” More than anything though, Dr. Curtis enjoys taking care of families, “from the newborns to their great-grandparents.”

When he is not busy with his patients, Dr. Curtis and his wife enjoy watching movies, going out to dinner around Leominster, traveling, and outdoor activities such as mountain biking and adventure races.
