“Being an OB-GYN, you get to play a special part in a family’s history, which I really enjoy.”

Originally from Cleveland, Dr. S. Ken Rao was inspired to become a doctor by his mother, who was a pediatrician. “She worked mostly in the inner city, so I could see what a big difference she was making in people’s lives,” he explains. “I saw the joy she obtained through helping others, and I wanted to do that in my own career.”

As an OB-GYN physician, Dr. Rao says he loves playing a role in the birth of a new family member. “You get to be part of someone’s life at a very important time,” he explains. “I always joke that you may forget who took out your gallbladder, but you usually remember who delivered your kids. Being an OB-GYN, you get to play a special part in a family’s history, which I really enjoy.”

In his practice Dr. Rao is a strong believer in partnering closely with his patients. “I always try to learn as much as I can about how a patient’s problem is disrupting their quality of life and then figure out what the best solutions are through a shared decision. I’ve learned that’s the best way to help people.”

Dr. Rao strives to deliver comprehensive care that’s focused on the full scope of women’s health. “One of the things I enjoy the most is helping a patient overcome a long-term problem they have, and then hearing how much better their life has become. As an OB-GYN physician you get to care for people throughout their entire lives, from obstetric care to menopausal care, and I really enjoy being able to make an impact.”

When he is not busy with patients, Dr. Rao enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. He is also a big sports fan of all things Cleveland.  He cannot wait to spend time at Fenway Park now that he is in the Boston area.
