A graduate of King’s College in Pennsylvania, Carellas was inspired to become a physician assistant by his great uncle Alex who was a medic in World War 2. “Many medics who served in the military in the 60s and 70s went on to become physician assistants after their service ended,” he explains. “I was also attracted to the more direct and accelerated training a physician assistant receives. Plus, it offers the chance to work within different fields in medicine.”
Carellas chose to work in internal medicine because he enjoys focusing on the broad picture of a person’s health and diagnosing and managing multiple diseases and disorders. “I find that I have a greater appreciation for the countless intricacies and interrelations between our body’s systems and the specific diseases that affect those systems,” he explains. “I like being able to treat my patients with a “big picture” perspective, rather than just zoning in on one problem.”
At Reliant, Carellas enjoys providing individualized care to each of his patients. “I strive to get to know and understand my patients’ points of view and to have open discussions with them regarding their care,” he explains. “I want each patient to feel like they are being heard and that they know that their interests are my only priority. I love seeing my patients improve their health and wellbeing and being able to better enjoy their lives as a result. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my patients happy, healthy, and doing better. That’s why I love this profession so much.”
When he is not busy seeing patients, Carellas enjoys spending time with his wife Magdalene and traveling with her. He also enjoys watching his favorite sports teams, including the Red Sox, Celtics, Steelers and Penguins, as well as playing basketball and other sports. Carellas also find time for reading, biking, hiking and fantasy football.
