What is a Midwife?

A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is a registered nurse with advanced training in obstetrics and gynecology that is certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives. In addition, they must demonstrate clinical competence and pass a rigorous national exam after their training. The CNM is trained in both nursing and midwifery.

CNMs at Reliant Medical Group take care of women who are in overall good health. If you have a medical or an obstetrical complication, the CNM will refer you to the care of an obstetrician or in some cases you can be co-managed. The CNMs and physicians work together as a cohesive team to ensure the health of you and your newborn child.

What Does a Midwife Do?

Below is just a snapshot of what midwives do and the types of medical issues they treat:

  • Pap smears
  • Birth Control – including IUDs and Nexplanon insertions
  • Screening for sexually transmitted infections
  • Breast and pelvic exams
  • Menstrual problems
  • Pregnancy care
  • Postpartum care
  • Attend deliveries of infants in the hospital setting
  • Assist physicians with C/Section deliveries
  • Manage pregnancy loss
  • Prescribe medications as needed
  • Family planning prior to pregnancy/preconception visit
  • Infertility
  • Menopause

Many people do not realize that midwives perform routine gynecologic care along with birthing and pre-natal care. You can schedule an appointment with a midwife for any of your gynecological needs.

At Reliant Medical Group, CNMs attend births at Saint Vincent Hospital which is located in the Worcester Medical Center.  The nurse-midwifery practice was established at Reliant Medical Group in 1990. Currently, we have Certified Nurse Midwives practicing in many of our locations.
