“It’s great that there’s more awareness now of the interplay between behavioral health and medical health in the lives of patients.”

During college, Dr. Lori Connors initially thought she was going to be a pediatrician but enjoyed her psychology classes so much that she ultimately decided to become a behavioral therapist.

Some of the typical problems that Dr. Connors treats in her practice include panic attacks, problems with anxiety and depression, and eating disorders, including anorexia and bulimia. She also does a lot of work with couples, helping with conflict resolution, communication problems, and intimacy issues. Dr. Connors also assists people who have serious medical problems including lupus, multiple sclerosis and spinal injuries better adjust to life after their diagnosis.

Dr. Connors believes the first step in helping a patient is uncovering what their problem is. “Once I have a good understanding of the underlying issues, I teach them breathing techniques, mindfulness, and meditation techniques to help them get a hold of their physical symptoms. Then I move on to the cognitive techniques, for instance, helping them overcome a fear that is affecting their life. You have to identify what that fear is and then help them change their perception of that fear to help them overcome it.”

Dr. Connors is often referred to patients by their primary care provider when they notice a problem. “These days, primary care doctors are much more involved in the behavioral health aspect of their patients’ care. I actually speak to almost all of my patients’ primary care doctors. It’s great that there’s more awareness now of the interplay between behavioral health and medical health in the lives of patients.”

When she is not busy helping her patients, Dr. Connors enjoys reading and jogging. She also keeps very busy with her three children, who are very involved in youth sports including hockey, baseball and figure skating.
