“I work hard to discuss the pros and cons of different treatments with patients and help decide what will work best for them.”
Dr. Houman Javady comes from a family of physicians. “During my childhood I remember at dinnertime there was usually a discussion about medicine and what the physicians in my family were working on that day,” he explains. “I found the conversation fascinating and it made me passionate about studying medicine.”
Dr. Javady started his career as a hospitalist before completing his fellowship in Infectious Diseases. Now he enjoys utilizing his knowledge to provide specialized care for his patients. “We know that evidence-based medicine is the best way to treat patients,” he explains. “Now we have a newer version of evidence-based care which we call tailored medicine. This combines the latest medical findings with the details of the patient’s condition which helps guide you on diagnosis and treatment. I work hard to discuss the pros and cons of different treatments with patients and help decide what will work best for them.”
Dr. Javady has seen a lot of positive changes in the way he treats patients. “For instance, in the field of HIV we now can use injections for patients. So instead of taking 20 pills per day patients just require one injection every two months. The treatments we offer are constantly changing in ways that benefit patients,” he explains. “I expect they will continue to evolve and improve.”
While working on a diagnosis, Dr. Javady has used artificial intelligence (AI) to solve difficult problems. “AI is very promising and I think it will integrate more into medicine and influence the treatments we give,” he explains. “I used it during my fellowship and it was really interesting to solve some cases with it that were very difficult to solve otherwise. It gave us the information we needed to unlock the puzzle. At the end of the day making a good diagnosis is very rewarding, especially one that can potentially save a life.”
Dr. Javady is married with two children. His wife is a physician who works in Endocrinology. During his free time Dr. Javady likes to play tennis and pickleball as well as travel, especially to exotic locales.
