Kim Estremera has always had a passion for how weight affects the human body, both mentally and physically. She loves helping patients make a lasting impact on their health by achieving their weight management goals. “I have a big interest in the psychology of behavior change and how the use of counseling techniques can support patients in their health changes,” she explains. “Empowering others on their journey of health and body transformation is something I take great pride and joy in.”
In her work at Reliant, Kim helps people dealing with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, lipid disorders, PCOS, and heart disease. She is also the dietitian for Reliant’s Bariatric Surgery Program. In addition to dietary changes, Kim believes the use of new prescription weight loss medications can really make a difference for patients. “They have really changed the landscape in terms of treatment options,” she explains. “There is a lot of emerging research that these medications can help with many aspects of people’s health.”
Kim has extensive experience with the Spanish-speaking community and their food culture. “I value cultural diversity and understand how that plays such a big role in people’s health,” she explains. “I can also speak some Spanish and I understand even more as my husband is from Puerto Rico.”
Kim understands that each person’s weight loss journey is unique and shaped by many physical, emotional and social factors. “I believe in meeting people where they are, without judgement, and providing high quality, compassionate care,” she explains. “I stress sustainability over quick fixes, focusing on long-term habits rather than fad diets or temporary solutions. I emphasize creating a lifestyle that is realistic and sustainable using a holistic approach.”
According to Kim, the most rewarding part of her job is seeing patients lose weight and gain their lives back. “When they tell me that they have more energy, can be more active with their kids and grandkids, take fewer medications, and believe they can live a longer and healthier life, it’s incredibly satisfying to me.”
In her spare time Kim enjoys talking a walk outside, lifting weights, cuddling her kittens, traveling, enjoying the ocean, and being with friends and family.
