As a college undergraduate, Dr. Alexander Connaughton volunteered as an EMT in order to find out if the medical field was right for him. “I really enjoyed it, and that helped me decide to go into medicine and eventually become an orthopedic surgeon,” he explains. Dr. Connaughton says that one of the reasons he was interested in becoming an orthopedic surgeon is that the field is so innovative. “You constantly have to keep up-to-date. There’s always new technologies and new ways to treat patients – that’s what makes it so interesting.”
Dr. Connaughton treats all manner of orthopedic problems for adults and children including ligament tears, muscle/tendon strains, and other types of sports-related injuries. He specializes in the non-operative and operative treatment of sports medicine injuries. Dr. Connaughton performs minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee joints. Some common procedures he performs are ACL reconstructions, labral repairs, and rotator cuff repairs.
In his practice Dr. Connaughton takes a patient-centered team-based approach in caring for his patients. “When patients come into my office with an injury I try to comfort them and then educate them on what the best available treatment options are. Then we can decide on what the best treatment plan is for the patient together as a team.”
Dr. Connaughton says he enjoys working closely with his patients to make sure they get the right care and the best outcome possible. “In the unfortunate circumstance when a patient gets injured, the most gratifying part of my job is seeing that patient get back to work, sports, and other activities that they love to do after I have had the opportunity to treat them.”
When he is not busy seeing patients, Dr. Connaughton enjoys outdoor activities. He and his fiancée like to go hiking, cycling, kayaking, camping and play a variety of sports. They also enjoy traveling within the United States as well as abroad.
