“Knowing that you have helped someone make a positive difference in their overall health is very satisfying.”
Originally from Ghana, Dr. Adelaide Sefah saw growing up that there was a lot of health disparity in the town she lived in. “That was the major factor for me going into medicine,” she explains. “I wanted to serve patients that came from a lower socio-economic background and give them the care they need.”
Dr. Sefah enjoys being a Family Practice provider because she can treat all types of patients from young to old. “I really enjoy the long-term relationships I get to build with my patients. I love learning about my patient’s lives and their families. When they share their personal stories it helps me develop a really strong bond with them.”
In her practice Dr. Sefah has a big interest in women’s health and patient education. She enjoys helping patients take advantage of the latest technology for their health. “I will often recommend that patients use apps to track their blood sugar and blood pressure,” she explains. “That way, they will have a lot of valuable information when they come to visit me.” Dr. Sefah also teaches her patients how to read ingredient labels and recommends apps that are helpful for diet and weight loss. “It’s important for patients to know more about what they are eating. By looking at the fat, protein and carbohydrate level of foods they can make improvements in their diet. I will also show patients exercise apps they can download to their phone that can be very helpful.”
One of the things that Dr. Sefah enjoys the most about her job is helping her patients reach their health goals. “People are very proud when they are able to reduce their blood sugar or blood pressure to a healthier level. Knowing that you have helped someone make a positive difference in their overall health is very satisfying.”
Dr. Sefah has two young daughters that she says are “the light of my world.” During her free time she enjoys cooking African dishes, visiting family, and shopping.
