Growing up with poor vision helped lead Dr. Kurtis Zimmerman to a career in optometry. “I was one of those kids with bad eyes so I was constantly at the eye doctor’s office,” he explains. “As I got older, I realized a career as an optometrist would be a fun way to be able to work with people and pursue my love of science.”
Dr. Zimmerman believes in working closely with his patients and keeping them informed about their visual health. “Good vision is so important to a person’s quality of life. That’s why I enjoy being an optometrist so much – it’s a great way of helping people and really having an impact on their lives.”
At Reliant Medical Group, Dr. Zimmerman spends a lot of time treating eye injuries and other urgent problems, as well as providing post-operative care for patients. He works closely with Reliant Medical Group ophthalmologists, and will direct a patient to the appropriate ophthalmologist if they require surgery or more specialized care.
As an optometrist, Dr. Zimmerman enjoys taking advantage of the latest diagnostic equipment available. “We have some great new technology at Reliant Medical Group for diagnosing eye problems, including our Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanner which uses light waves to create highly detailed images of the eye. OCT helps our doctors diagnose and treat glaucoma and other diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. It’s a powerful, non-invasive tool that can help us find problems that we couldn’t see before with other instruments.”
Like other practitioners at Reliant Medical Group, Dr. Zimmerman enjoys being able to utilize a completely electronic health record system. “It’s great to be able to have such quick access to information and be able to communicate with other providers so easily. Plus, I can easily check a patient’s medical history and find out so much other useful information.”
When he is not busy with his patients, Dr. Zimmerman enjoys spending time with his wife and stepdaughters as well as following his favorite sports teams including the Red Sox and the Kansas State University Wildcats basketball team. He also enjoys reading.
