Overall Patient Rating
4.9 out of 5 stars - 120 total ratingsWhen Dr. Nikhil Shah was in college he took a course in physiology which began his interest in studying the heart. “I was really fascinated by this organ from a young age and wanted to learn more about how it works. As I entered medical school my interest only grew and I knew I would make cardiology my life’s work.”
After completing his cardiology fellowship Dr. Shah decided to specialize in electrophysiology. “Cardiac electrophysiology is a subspecialty of cardiology that focuses on the heart’s electrical system and on diagnosing, treating, and managing arrhythmias, which are abnormal heart rhythms,” he explains. “In addition to helping patients with medication, we can use sophisticated procedures to reset the electrical signals of the heart and restore a normal rhythm. This includes implanting pacemakers and defibrillators as well as catheter ablation procedures. With so many new and effective options to treat patients, it’s an exciting time to be practicing as an electrophysiologist.”
Dr. Shah realizes that every patient is different and has unique goals. “I tell my patients there are different ways to manage their condition depending on what their goals are. Not everyone wants an invasive procedure and not everyone wants to take a medication indefinitely. I strive to help each patient understand the different options and what could work best for them to improve their quality of life.”
Dr. Shah says that one of his favorite things about being an electrophysiologist is when a patient comes back to see him after treatment and tells him they feel so much better and are able to return to the activities they love. “I really enjoy that aspect of my job,” he explains. “It’s great to be able to make a difference for patients.”
Dr. Shah grew up in the Worcester area and also went to medical school here. When he is not busy helping patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two dogs and adding to his vinyl record collection. He is also a big technology enthusiast and enjoys being involved with the India Society of Worcester.
