“I really enjoy working in Nephrology and find it a fascinating specialty.”
Growing up in Nepal, Dr. Subhash Paudel saw how doctors and other caregivers could assist people through difficult times and help them get better. This helped inspire him to make the decision to become a doctor. After graduating medical school, he started his career as a hospitalist before later completing a fellowship in Nephrology.
“I really enjoy working in Nephrology and find it a fascinating specialty,” he explains. “Kidney diseases can be challenging but are rewarding to treat. As a nephrologist I see patients with chronic kidney disease, hypertension and auto-immune diseases that affect their kidneys. I also see patients in the hospital that are experiencing acute kidney problems.”
According to Dr. Paudel, the vast majority of kidney disease occurs because of conditions like diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure). “A healthy lifestyle and diet can reduce the risk of kidney disease. However, due to the increasing incidence of diabetes and high blood pressure, we are seeing more patients affected by kidney problems.”
Dr. Paudel says his favorite part of practicing Nephrology at Reliant is interacting with his patients. “I like being able to help my patients in ways large and small. That’s really what I enjoy the most about being a nephrologist.” During the last decade Dr. Paudel has seen a lot of innovation in treating kidney disease. “There’s a lot of new promising medications that we can offer our patients now and a lot of research is being done. There’s also a greater understanding of the genetic causes of kidney disease, so overall it’s a very exciting time to work as a nephrologist.”
In his spare time Dr. Paudel enjoys cycling, going on hikes, reading, and working in the garden with his wife, who also practices at Reliant Medical Group.
