Learn more about Behavioral Health at Reliant
Doreen has always enjoyed working with children and adolescents whether it be as a camp counselor, in high school and college, as a teacher, and finally as a therapist.
As a teacher, Doreen was always drawn to those students who struggled. Whether it be the ones who struggled with friends, were being bullied, or those with behavioral issues doing the bullying. “Instead of ignoring the problem, I wanted to find the solution. In other words, ‘Why is this youth acting the way he or she is? What is the underlying reason for these behaviors and how can I help them overcome what is driving these behaviors? This is what led me to switch careers and go into the behavioral health field,” she explains.
Doreen strives to treat each patient with the kindness, respect, and patience they deserve. “I am there to support, listen, and advocate for their needs,” she explains. “I have been told by my patients that they appreciate my non-judgmental approach, my ability to validate feelings, listen, and help them work through their issues.” Doreen has extensive experience in treating youth with problem sexual behaviors as well as childhood trauma. She also has experience in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), working with children with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and those who struggle with school-related issues.
Doreen enjoys being able to help a patient see their strengths and their abilities and help them work through and overcome their struggles. “Seeing patients make gains and progress to a more happy and successful life is the most rewarding part of my job,” she explains. “Nobody should feel embarrassed or ashamed to reach out for help or admit they need help. That’s what we are here for.”
In her spare time Doreen enjoys hiking, attending concerts and baking as well as spending time with her husband, two sons, and their pet dog.
