Overall Patient Rating
4.8 out of 5 stars - 38 total ratingsBorn in England, Dr. Mathew Wylie came to America as a teenager when his family settled in Minnesota. His interest in science, especially molecular biology, eventually led him to medical school. “It was there that I fell in love with pediatrics and I have been enjoying practicing it ever since,” he explains.
One of the things that Dr. Wylie enjoys the most about being a pediatrician is getting to know the families he cares for. “As a pediatrician you get to know families from the very beginning. You’re with them from the moment the baby arrives until the kids get through college,” he explains. “It’s just really great to be part of the family in that way.”
As an experienced pediatrician, Dr. Wylie believes that there is an art to being a good parent. “I try to help parents the best I can master the art of parenting. It’s a difficult road to walk sometimes because nobody likes to be told their parenting could be improved. I think the art of being a good pediatrician is learning where you can help and learning when to just let it be and let parents makes their own decisions.”
One of the most difficult problems that Dr. Wylie tackles in his practice is childhood obesity. “Obesity can really have a detrimental effect on the lives of children and many will continue to have weight issues into adulthood, so it’s important to address it,” he explains. “If you can get a child to have a normal body mass index (BMI) for their age you can ward off a lot of future health problems. It often takes a group of caregivers including nutritionists and behavioral psychologists to really make an impact.”
One of the reasons Dr. Wylie enjoys practicing in Milford is the integrated nature of the care. “It’s very convenient for parents as we have lactation support, as well as lab and X-ray at the same location. Having easy access to these services for parents really makes a difference.”
When he is not busy helping patients Dr. Wylie enjoys being with his wife and children and coaching youth sports, especially soccer. He also likes to hike and travel with his family.
Star ratings are based on patient responses to 5 questions about the care they have received from their provider. Responses are measured on a scale of 1-5 and the average score is displayed in an easy to view, 5-star format. Learn more about how we measure our patient experience.
