“You have to understand the dynamics of how each family works to provide proper care.”
A native of Central Massachusetts, Dr. Michelle Sicard enjoys practicing in the area she grew up in. Although she has performed a lot of roles in her medical career, she truly loves pediatrics. “When I was in college at Clark University, I did the Big Brother/Big Sister program and really loved it,” she explains. “While at Clark, I also did an internship in Child Life at UMass Medical Center in the inpatient pediatrics ward and really loved it. It was then that I knew pediatrics was the career for me.”
Dr. Sicard treats all manner of childhood health problems, but has a special interest in treating anxiety, depression, ADHD and gastrointestinal issues. “Education is a very big part of what I do – teaching people about their health and why I am recommending this option versus that option,” she explains. “It’s important to understand not just the child, but the whole family unit and how they interact with each other. You have to understand the dynamics of how each family works to provide proper care.”
During her career, Dr. Sicard completed a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she also performed research. “I practiced as a pediatric GI physician for two years after my fellowship training. There are so many conditions tied to our gut health. We are discovering more and more about this everyday…from obesity to type 2 diabetes, IBD, and other conditions. Having experienced gastrointestinal issues within my own family, I appreciate how difficult it can be.”
One of the reasons Dr. Sicard enjoys working at Reliant is the team approach to care. “My team here is such a big part of what I do. At Reliant, the nurses, patient service specialists, medical assistants and advanced practitioners all work together with the physician,” she explains. “We all rely on each other to provide the best possible care.”
When she is not busy helping patients, Dr. Sicard enjoys spending time with her Havapoo dog Bella and with family and friends. She is also a gifted artist and is a huge fan of the Boston Celtics.
