“When it comes to care, I tell my patients that you’re the driver and I’m kind of your GPS.”
A third-generation physician, Dr. Rodrigo Valderrábano has been working in the medical field for over two decades. Most of his early career was spent in academic medicine and research. He was the Director of the Bone Metabolism Clinic for the University of Miami for several years, where he led his own team of researchers and also participated in clinical studies with the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Investigating the science behind common bone diseases and finding ways of helping people living with spinal cord injuries. “From a young age I knew I wanted to be a physician and that has led me down a lot of fascinating paths,” he explains.
One of the reasons Dr. Valderrábano likes practicing in endocrinology is the diversity. “This field allows you to study muscles and bones which is a big interest of mine. I also have a special interest in nutrition and exercise and how to use that to achieve better health. I’m also very interested in men’s health.”
People come to see Dr. Valderrábano for a variety of reasons including thyroid disorders, diabetes, hormonal problems, adrenal issues, osteoporosis, pituitary gland problems as well as obesity and related conditions such as high blood pressure.
When working with patients that need to lose weight, Dr. Valderrábano first explains why weight loss can be so frustrating. “It’s important to remember our bodies were built to survive times of famine. When we reduce our food intake during a diet the human body thinks that times are tough and doesn’t want to give up its fat stores easily,” he explains. “This is how our bodies evolved over many thousands of years. So, it’s difficult for everyone to lose weight, but with the right guidance it can be done.”
When treating his patients Dr. Valderrábano says he likes to work with them closely, one-on-one. “I believe a good partnership between doctor and patient is important. When it comes to care, I tell my patients that you’re the driver and I’m kind of your GPS. So, I’m really here to guide you to better health.”
When he is not helping patients, Dr. Valderrábano enjoys spending time with his wife and children as well as working out at the gym, doing gardening and yardwork, and playing flamenco guitar.
