Since he loved to work with children, Dr. Jason Kass originally thought he would be a pediatrician. However, he enjoyed surgery so much that he decided to specialize in Otolaryngology (ears, nose and throat). “Becoming an otolaryngologist allowed me to enjoy the challenge of surgery while also treating children and adults,” he explains. “As an otolaryngologist you need a unique blend of medical and surgical skills which makes it a very rewarding specialty.”
In his practice Dr. Kass helps patients with a wide range of otolaryngology issues including ear, nose and throat problems, parotid disease, thyroid disease, sleep apnea, head and neck cancers, and many other problems. Dr. Kass completed a fellowship in advanced oncology and is one of the few otolaryngologists in the area who can perform robotic-assisted surgery and utilize reconstructive techniques for head and neck cancers. “We are in the midst of an epidemic of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) associated cancer. With the advent of robotic technology, we can do minimally invasive cancer surgery which has great outcomes and is much easier on the patient than ever before.”
As a physician Dr. Kass believes his role is to educate the patient as much as possible regarding their health and let them know the best options to facilitate their care. “I want the patient to partner with me in helping them enjoy better health,” he explains. “I believe a good physician-patient partnership is essential to proper care.”
Dr. Kass also treats sleep apnea patients and has seen how proper treatment can really change a patient’s life. “There are a lot of ways to help sleep apnea patients now. For instance, I used a surgical technique to improve the breathing of one of my patients. Not only is he breathing better, but he’s lost 25 pounds, he’s sleeping better, and it fundamentally changed his health. In fact, his blood pressure was normal for the first time in many years. It’s really satisfying when you can positively affect a patient like that.”
When he is not busy with patients Dr. Kass enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. He also loves to cook, especially grilling.

Dr Kass was (to my perception) out of his depth. Asked me what I expected him to do? He said if I requested later he would refer me to an Otolaryngologist in Boston. He was very personable and polite, but I think my needs were outside of his comfort zone. Or any issues concerning voice. In our first visit he did refer me to vocal rehab, but only after I explicitly requested it. My impression is that voice isn't so much an area he focuses in. It's OK as everyone in a broad specialty can't focus deeply on every aspect! I'm looking forward to getting that referral after a bit more vocal rehab. I think think that will be a better use for both of our time and effort.
