“I tell my patients I will always be on your side, and we will fight this together.”

Dr. Mohammed Wazir first became interested in cancer care when a close relative of his had cancer when he was younger. “That made me want to contribute and learn more about fighting this disease” he explains. “One of my grandfathers was also a pediatrician. Being around my family gave me a very strong desire to help people, and make a positive impact on a person’s life.”

Dr. Wazir began his career in the US at AdventHealth Orlando where he completed his internal medicine residency. He subsequently joined the Brigham and Women’s Hospital working as a hospitalist. “I gained a lot of experience with cancer patients since it is the main admitting hospital for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute,” he explains. “I also did research there, so it was a great experience before my fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at UMass Medical School.”

In his practice Dr. Wazir has as a specific interest in prostate cancer, lung cancer and cancers of the gastro-intestinal tract. He also treats blood diseases such as chronic leukemia, myeloma, deep vein thrombosis, and anemias. He has a wide range of experience in treating cancers of the breast, genitourinary tract, skin, as well as head and neck cancers.

Dr. Wazir likes to work closely with each of his patients. “Cancer is a tough diagnosis,” he explains. “I tell my patients I will always be on your side, and we will fight this together. I treat everyone like a family member. Fortunately, there are more treatment options than ever before. Although not everyone can be cured, many patients can live with cancer a long time.”

In his work Dr. Wazir is encouraged by new treatments that fight cancer at the genetic level. “We know that many cancers have a genetic component. So we work to detect the gene mutations that are driving the cancer to replicate and grow uncontrollably. This allows us to treat the cancer with targeted therapies and customize each patient’s treatment.”

When he is not busy with patients, Dr. Wazir enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He is an avid squash player and enjoys trying different cuisines from around the world.
