“With my diverse surgical experience, I am very comfortable treating severe conditions that can affect the eyes.”
Born in Taiwan, Sandra Dr. Hu-Torres became a physician because she had a big desire to assist others, including helping them get the care they need. “I always felt that healthcare is a right, not a privilege,” she explains. “So throughout my career I have always tried to help the underserved population, including helping them benefit from health services they otherwise might not receive.”
When she first started studying medicine, Dr. Hu-Torres thought she was going to be a pathologist. However, in medical school she was introduced to surgery and discovered that she was really adept working with her hands. “So, instead of working in the lab, I decided to do something that could combine my surgery skills with patient care,” she explains. “That led me to becoming an ophthalmologist.”
Dr. Hu-Torres has a great deal of experience in cataract and glaucoma surgery. She performs many different minimally invasive procedures to help patients including Omni® Viscocanaloplasty, Hydrus® Microstent, trabeculectomy, XEN® gel stent and tube shunt therapy. “With my diverse surgical experience, I am very comfortable treating severe conditions that can affect the eyes. These highly advanced procedures can often be sight-saving for patients.”
Dr. Hu-Torres spends a lot of time treating patients suffering from glaucoma. “Anyone can suffer from this sight-threatening eye disease,” she explains. However, it’s usually a combination of genetics, age, and certain health conditions that contribute to someone getting glaucoma. Although glaucoma is a very serious eye disease, there are numerous ways we can effectively treat it and save a person’s eyesight.”
Dr. Hu-Torres and her husband, who is also a physician, have two children. They enjoy family time together as well as traveling. Dr. Hu-Torres also enjoys playing the violin and spending time with Oliver, the family’s mini Schnauzer.
