Born in Nepal, Dr. Soni Gurung has long had a special interest in medicine. “From an early age, I was very curious about how the human body worked,” she explained. “When I saw doctors heal people just by giving them medicine, that really fascinated me. That helped inspire me to become a doctor.”

Dr. Gurung truly enjoys her work as a hospitalist at Reliant. “I really like to uncover what’s going on with my patients,” she explains. “It gives me the opportunity to collaborate with my colleagues and also think creatively. Treating the patient and seeing them overcome a complex illness is very rewarding to me. That’s why I like practicing in hospital medicine.”

In her work, Dr. Gurungs strongly believes in taking a holistic approach. “When you are sick you are very vulnerable,” she explains. “People need more than just medical care, they also need a lot of psycho-social and emotional support to foster healing.”

One aspect of being a hospitalist at Reliant that Dr. Gurung enjoys is being able to closely communicate with all the patient’s caregivers. “When needed, we all collaborate with each other. Whether it’s the patient’s primary care doctor or a specialist they are seeing, we are all in the same system working together. That way the patient receives the best possible care during their stay and after they are discharged from the hospital.”

When she is not busy with patients, Dr. Gurung enjoys spending time with her husband and son. She also enjoys hiking and traveling to different countries. Dr. Gurung also loves to watch documentaries of different ethnic group and cultures around the world.
