Although anyone who has ever attended a birthday party for a five-year old will swear by it, there is no scientific evidence that sugar causes hyperactivity in children. In fact, numerous double-blind studies have shown that this is a myth. One reason this idea has persisted is that children tend to be more excited at events like birthday and Halloween parties where sugary foods are often served. In any case, sugar has been linked to obesity, diabetes and dental cavities in children, so it’s best not to overdo the sugary foods when your throw your next party.

While, we cannot say sugar makes kids hyper; however, you can’t discount that sugar may have a slight effect on behavior. The diet may have led parents to perceive that sugar is a culprit when it comes to kids’ excitable behavior, even if it is not the true cause of one’s hyperactivity.

This was borne out by my son when he was a child. Sugar itself meant little, but artificial coloris in foods made he very hyperactive. Eliminate the colors and preservatives you you can see a difference in a very active child.
