Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common reasons why women have to visit a doctor. Many people believe that drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry supplements can help prevent UTIs. While there is an active ingredient in cranberry juice that can prevent the adherence of bacteria to the bladder wall, medical studies have not been totally conclusive on whether drinking cranberry juice helps or not. Some studies show that there is not enough of the active ingredient to prevent the bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract, others indicate that drinking cranberry juice may indeed decrease the number of UTIs with women who suffer from recurrent infections. So, the answer is that cranberry juice may help, and it certainly can’t hurt when it comes to preventing this painful and inconvenient problem.
