Botox® – A New Way to Treat Neurological Illnesses

Doctors have discovered that Botox, which has become well known for treating facial lines and wrinkles, is an excellent way to treat disorders that produce involuntary muscle spasms (dystonia), as well as other problems in patients. Botox is now used in the treatment of:

  • Blepharospasm (involuntary control of eyelids)
  • Strabismus – (misalignment of the eyes)
  • Spasmodic torticollis (muscle spasms in the neck)
  • Urinary retention
  • Limb spasticity
  • Stuttering
  • Voice tremors

Botox works by blocking the electrical signals from the brain that tell a muscle to contract. Treatments are not permanent, and are repeated about every three months. If you would like to know more about Botox treatments for dystonia and similar problems, talk to your doctor.
