As we get older, our bones can become thinner and less dense, increasing the danger of osteoporosis. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to prevent this disease.
- Get enough calcium. It’s a great way to keep your bones strong. Foods that are high in calcium are the best source. Make low-fat dairy foods, canned fish such as salmon, and dark-green leafy vegetables a regular part of your diet.
- Vitamin D is important. Your body needs Vitamin D to absorb calcium. Most people are able to make enough vitamin D if they are out in the sun without sunscreen for 10 to 15 minutes at least twice a week. You can also get vitamin D from eggs, fatty fish, and cereal and milk fortified with vitamin D.
- Don’t forget to exercise. Weight-bearing exercises, such as jogging, playing tennis, and dancing several times a week can help prevent osteoporosis.
- Talk to your doctor. Regular bone density screenings are the best way to detect osteoporosis.
