There’s no doubt that expecting a baby during the hot and humid summer months can be a little challenging. Pregnant women are more intolerant of heat because they have a body temperature that is a bit higher than normal.
Although June, July or August may not be the easiest months to have a baby, you can be more comfortable with a little preparation. Be sure to pay attention to the heat index (a measure of heat and humidity) and if it is in the 90’s, stay indoors with the air conditioning on as much as you can. Taking a shower is a great way to feel better and cool down, especially if you have been outside exercising or doing errands.
Here’s some other tips to help you get through your summer pregnancy:
- Drink plenty of fluids to remain hydrated. Water, milk and sports drinks are the best choices. Sports drinks can help replace your body’s electrolytes which are sweated away on a hot day.
- Carry a spray bottle filled with water so you can enjoy a quick cool-down when you need it.
- Minimize salt intake, which will help combat water retention.
- Put your feet up to alleviate swelling.
- Swimming is a great exercise for pregnant women and offers the benefit of keeping you cool.
- Remember that your skin is more sensitive to the sun while pregnant. Protect yourself before going outside by applying a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Wearing a broad-brimmed hat is also a good idea.
- Be aware of prickly heat rash, which is caused by heat and sweat. It often occurs when two skin surfaces rub together, such as under the breasts.
- You can prevent rashes by keeping your skin cool and dry. Wearing light cotton fabrics can also help. See your doctor if a rash persists.
Although being pregnant in the summer months has its challenges, at least you have the opportunity to spend some time outdoors at the beach, pool or backyard. So, if you can, try to take some time off during the summer to enjoy yourself before your baby arrives.
