Food, Pregnancy, and You

When you become pregnant, everyone and their mother is giving you advice about what to eat and what not to eat. There are so many changes going on in your body and your body may not feel like it is yours.  You may be anxiously looking things up on the internet and then becoming even more confused about this avalanche of information.  Sound familiar?

So how do you know which advice to take?  If you are confused about the food recommendations during pregnancy, it may be helpful to schedule an appointment with a registered dietitian, a professional who is familiar with the food recommendations during pregnancy and may be able to help you sift through all the information that is coming your way.

The food choices you make during pregnancy are important for both of you.  Making sure that you are eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains and protein is a good start.  Also, getting enough calcium and eating heart-healthy fats can help ensure your baby’s and your health.

You may have been told that you can eat whatever you want because you are eating for two and are supposed to gain weight.  Yes, you are eating for two and yes, there should be some weight gain during pregnancy.  However, that little person inside of you is incredibly tiny and needs far fewer calories than you do.  And, gaining too much weight during pregnancy can risk both yours and your baby’s health.  If you are not sure how much weight you should gain during pregnancy, talk to your health care provider.
