If you have been prescribed a weight-loss drug such as Wegovy or Saxenda, you should be aware that there is an ongoing shortage of these medications, which is expected to last through the end of this year (and possibly longer). That’s why your local pharmacy may either be low or out of stock on certain strengths of these medications.
Both these medications are being increasingly prescribed by physicians across the country, which is what has led to the current shortage. Due to the challenges in availability, you may need to call a number of pharmacies to get your prescription filled. It is best to call and check for availability after your prescription has been sent to your pharmacy and has been approved by your insurance (if applicable). Your pharmacy can easily transfer your prescription to another one that has it in stock. Since the availability of these drugs changes constantly, Reliant is unable to update you on where you can find them. That’s why we are asking you to be proactive on locating the medications. Please also remember that unless your insurance company approves your prescription for Wegovy or Saxenda, you will not be able to receive it (unless you decide to pay for it out-of-pocket).
If you are unable to locate either Wegovy or Saxenda, there are unfortunately no similar medications that your Reliant provider can prescribe for you. It is best for you to simply keep looking or wait until the pharmacy you normally use replenishes its stock. Please note that your Reliant caregiver cannot prescribe a diabetes medication to replace Wegovy or Saxenda unless you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. We are sorry for any inconvenience these medication shortages may cause you. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
