Getting Your Child Ready for the New School Year

Aug 19, 2025 / Pediatrics

Summer seems to be flying by! Your child is probably counting down the last few days of their summer vacation. As you think about the upcoming school year, here are some tips to help make the transition a little smoother for you and your child:

  • Talk about the year ahead. Ask your child what they’re excited about—or nervous about. Let them know it’s totally normal to feel a mix of emotions.
  • Visit the new school together. If your child is starting at a new school, take a field trip to check it out. Walk or drive the route if your child will be walking or taking the bus.
  • Check their gear. Make sure your child has clothes that fit comfortably. Feeling good in what they wear can give them a boost of confidence and reduce distractions about how they look. Find a sturdy backpack that fits them well, and make sure they don’t overload it. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that a backpack weigh no more than 5% to 10% of a child’s weight.
  • Find a buddy. Whether for the bus or a carpool, having a friend to share the ride with can make mornings more fun and less stressful.
  • Plan to create a balanced daily routine. Make sure there’s time for healthy meals, outdoor play, and homework. A little structure goes a long way.
  • Ease into the school schedule. About a week before school starts, start waking your child up a bit earlier each day. That way, the first morning back won’t be such a shock to the system!
  • Make sleep a priority. Most kids need between nine and 12 hours of sleep to be at their best. A consistent bedtime routine—like reading or drawing before bed—can help them wind down.
  • Limit screen time before bed. Try to turn off electronics for at least an hour before bedtime. It really helps with getting a good night’s sleep.
  • Schedule doctor’s appointments. If your child wants to join a sports team, they may need proof of a physical. Book an annual physical with your Reliant pediatrician or stop by one of our five ReadyMED offices for a walk-in sports physical. (A sports physical does not take the place of a regular annual physical.) If your child needs an updated letter for the school nurse or a refill for an asthma inhaler to keep at school, remember to contact your primary care provider’s office!

Every new school year is a fresh start—a chance to grow, learn, and discover new things. With a little preparation and a lot of encouragement, your child will be ready to take on the new school year with confidence.
