Changing Your Eye Color for Halloween? It’s a Little Tricky

Oct 22, 2026 / Optometry

Want to look like your favorite movie character or celebrity this Halloween? Colored contact lenses can help change the look of your eyes, but using them the wrong way can be risky.

Many people think decorative contact lenses are harmless because they do not correct vision. However, these lenses still sit directly on your eyes. If they are not properly fitted or cared for, they can cause serious eye problems and, in some cases, even lead to vision loss.

Decorative Contact Lenses Have Many Names

You may see decorative contact lenses called:

  • Fashion contact lenses
  • Tinted contact lenses
  • Halloween contact lenses
  • Color contact lenses
  • Cosmetic contact lenses
  • Theater contact lenses
  • Non-prescription contact lenses

Buying Decorative Contact Lenses Safely

Even though decorative contact lenses are often used for fun or costumes, they are not cosmetics. They are actually medical devices regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Because of this, you need a prescription from a licensed eye doctor, such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Like regular contact lenses, decorative lenses are not one-size-fits-all. Your eye doctor must measure your eyes and make sure the lenses fit correctly. A poor-fitting lens can damage your eyes and increase the risk of:

  • Scratches on the cornea
  • Eye infections
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Blurred or reduced vision
  • Blindness

Avoid Buying Lenses from Unapproved Sellers

Never buy contact lenses from a beauty supply store, novelty shop, flea market, or Halloween store if they do not require a prescription. Sellers who offer lenses without a prescription may not provide proper instructions for cleaning and caring for them.

Once you have a valid prescription, you can purchase decorative lenses from your eye doctor, a reputable online retailer, or a mail-order company. Be sure the seller requires your prescription and verifies it with your doctor. They should ask for your doctor’s name and phone number before completing your order.

If a company is willing to sell you contact lenses without checking your prescription, choose a different seller.

Protect Your Eyes

After purchasing your lenses, follow all instructions for wearing, cleaning, and storing them. Proper care helps reduce the risk of infection and other eye problems.

If you experience redness, pain, irritation, or changes in your vision, remove the lenses and call your eye doctor right away. These may be signs of an eye infection or another serious problem.

Reliant Medical Group has IN Style OPTICAL shops in Holden, Southborough, Westborough, and Neponset St. In Worcester where you can place an order for decorative lenses.

This Halloween and throughout the year, always be safe and smart about what you put into your eyes!
