“It’s a very exciting time to be an oncologist now.”

As a young man Dr. Edison Tsui decided to take his love of science and desire to help others and turn it into a career in medicine. “I was always interested in how the human body worked and also wanted a career that would help others,” he explained. “So for me, becoming a doctor seemed like the ideal career.”

According to Dr. Tsui, oncology is an area of medicine where many exciting changes are happening. “There are frequent advances that end up changing a lot of patient care outcomes for the better,” he explains. “A lot of the cancer treatments are evolving and we have many more options in treating patients now. That can really benefit patients because in the past we would only have one or two options to work with. Therapies are also more targeted now since we can rely on molecular or genetic testing to find the best treatment for some cancers. These innovations are making a difference every day for patients.”

As a hematologist/oncologist, Dr. Tsui treats many different types of cancer with a particularly interest in bladder, renal, prostate cancer and breast cancer. “There is a strong genetic component to a lot of cancers, especially breast, colon and prostate cancer,” he explains. “As we learn more about these cancers there has been a lot of progress in treating them. And even if we can’t cure some of these cancers, we can still treat them and prolong people’s lives significantly. It’s a very exciting time to be an oncologist now.”

Dr. Tsui believes it’s important to establish a partnership with the patient and learn how involved they want to be in their own care. “I like to have a shared dialogue with the patient and help them make an informed decision on what their care options are,” he explains. “I really enjoy working closely with patients and making a difference in their care.”

When he is not busy helping patients Dr. Tsui enjoys spending time with his wife and son. He also enjoys swimming and playing the piano.
