Originally from Ghana, Dr. Kwame Amponsah first became interested in medicine through his godfather, who was a doctor. During his rotations in medical school, he decided to become an OB-Gyn physician because he wanted to help women have safer deliveries.

Dr. Amponsah’s primary role at Reliant is delivering babies at Saint Vincent Hospital but he also sees patients for a variety of gynecological issues. He is an experienced laparoscopic surgeon and has performed cystectomies, tubal ligations, hysterectomies as well as many other types of procedures.

When caring for patients Dr. Amponsah says that he tries to treat everyone as if they were a member of his own family. “I always put myself in the patient’s shoes,” he explains. “If it were me, how would I like to be treated? With that approach, I am able to be compassionate, and I always seek the patient’s opinion before I do anything. I work hard to solve the patient’s problem. That’s the way I like to practice.”

One of the things Dr. Amponsah enjoys the most about his job is being there for a successful birth and seeing the faces of the parents when their baby is born. “After going through what is sometimes a trying, difficult period, it’s great to congratulate parents on a successful birth. It’s wonderful to be able to contribute to a family in this way.”

During his free time, Dr. Amponsah enjoys soccer, ping pong and table tennis. He also likes traveling with his wife and family to Las Vegas and Martha’s Vineyard.
