Sheena started her career in medicine as a nurse before becoming an advanced practitioner. “I always had the desire to further my career,” she explains. “Once I found my footing as a nurse, I recognized how much I loved to teach patients. As a family nurse practitioner, I’m passionate about helping patients feeling empowered over their health. I really enjoy making a difference for them.”
As a member of the Virtual ReadyMED team at Reliant, Sheena provides care to patients where they feel most comfortable. “Whether talking to patients who are at home in bed or sitting on the floor with a child in their lap, helping people in their own space on their own time makes it easier for them,” she explains. “I also believe it improves a patient’s engagement in their own care.”
When treating patients, Sheena likes to meet people where they are and encourage them to actively participate in medical treatments and decisions. “It’s important for patients to hear, believe and trust what I say, she explains. “When we end the visit, it’s also important to me that the patient understands the ‘why’ behind my recommendations as well as feel that their needs, preferences, and values were prioritized.”
In her spare time Sheena enjoys cooking new recipes as well as gardening. She even enjoys making healthy dinners for her family with food grown in her own backyard.
